It combines a single session in the clinic with a home regimen defined by the aesthetic professional. It lasts approximately six months.

Frequently Asked Questions

The cosmelan® method is a topical treatment lasting approximately 6 months that combines a single salon session with the at-home treatment necessary to obtain optimum results.

At the clinic: A single session where the aesthetic professional applies the mask with an intensive depigmenting action.

At home: The treatment continues at home. Under the aesthetic professional’s indications and recommendations, the patient must adhere to a regimen for the application of the cosmeceuticals complementary to the method, which will vary according to the phase and progress of the treatment. The depigmentation process continues and we work on the source of the problem for a lasting result.

With cosmelan® we treat all types of spots of melanin origin, that is, spots originating due to melanin overproduction triggered by several factors (hormonal, genetic, post-acne, post-depilation factors, etc.) that worsen due to sun exposure. Therefore, cosmelan® is effective to treat spots such as: melasma, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentations (PIH), solar, senile lentigo and freckles.

Cosmelan® can be used at any time of the year, though it is advisable to do it at times when sun exposure is not so intense or prolonged, such as the winter and autumn. In case you live in a hot region or apply the treatment in the summer, you must take greater care and use a very high sunscreen, such as melan 130 pigment control and avoid completely very intense and prolonged sun exposure.

The cosmelan® method consists of four phases which are necessary to achieve the target result. Intensive depigmentation in phase 1 and treatment for home use in phases 2, 3 and 4. The total duration of treatment is about 6 months, that can change based on the severity of the case.
The most significant change takes place a few weeks after applying the mask in clinic, it improves skin texture and spots decrease noticeably. This can give a misleading feeling of success. During this period melanin has been removed from the outermost skin layers, and therefore we see the spot much more faded and the skin smoother and softer, but the origin of the problem has not been controlled yet. The melanocyte, a cell where melanin is produced, is still uncontrolled and continues to produce pigment (melanin) in excess. To re-educate the melanocyte and control this overproduction, it is important to continue a home treatment with regulating action, so that the cell returns to a normal active state and therefore prevent spots from reappearing
Yes, all phototypes 1-6 can have cosmelan.
It is a one off in clinic treatment. However, the method is a two-part program over 12 months. The in-clinic treatment is the first part, and this works on correction. The second part of the procedure is using the homecare cream correctly for 12 months after. In some cases, clients may need a second treatment if they have deeper pigmentation.
Yes, there is downtime. On average the client may experience peeling/flaking for 7-21 days, redness for up to 30 days, possible swelling for 3-7 days and sensitivity for up to 8 weeks.
Everyone is different. Some clients may get the best results within 4-8 weeks, and some may take longer. The average reduction after 4 weeks is 80% but some may experience less or more.
It depends on what has caused the pigmentation in the first place. If the cause (trigger) is still present, then there is a risk of it returning. Triggers consist of UVA, UVB, HEV, IR light, hormonal issues, medication, genetics, unsuitable chemical substances applied to the skin, inflammation like acne.
Yes. SPF needs to be applied in the morning and then reapplied every 2 hours when exposed to damaging rays. One day of unprotected skin can undo all the work.
It is most likely the pigmentation is not returning. When someone has deeper pigmentation to start with this can take time to come to the surface. Dermal pigmentation can work its way up through the skin’s layers and start to be visible from 4 weeks to 9 months after the initial cosmelan treatment. This is normal and it is the only way it can be removed. Maintenance treatments can be performed, and other products can be introduced to encourage its removal.
Cosmelan is for the face, neck or chest only. It cannot be used on any other part of the body for two reasons. Firstly, the mask/peel needs to be left on for a long period of time and cannot be covered with clothing. Secondly, due to the downtime of the treatment clothing and movement would cause friction and irritation to the areas which could lead to an adverse reaction and scarring.
No. The only products that can be introduced at home within the 12-month method are mesoestetic products. As mesoestetic have formulated their products to coincide with their in-clinic treatments this is the only way to ensure the treatment will work effectively and prevent adverse reactions.
Dermamelan is the medical version of cosmelan. It has different ingredients and has a different aftercare program.
In cases of extreme hyperpigmentation. For example, if a client has extensive melasma, it is very deep and has been there for a very long time.
